Good news for Xbox gamers: the hit co-op shooter, Helldivers 2, is making its way to Xbox Series X|S on August 26, complete with cross-play! This is a big deal because it’s the first time Sony’s own PlayStation Studios is directly publishing one of its major titles on a Microsoft console.
Why is Sony Doing This? It’s About the Money!
For years, Sony has been bringing more of its PlayStation games to Windows PC, and now they’re testing the waters with Xbox. The main reason? Profit. Multiplayer and “live-service” games like Helldivers 2 thrive with more players. The more people playing, the more potential sales of the game itself and in-game purchases like Helldivers 2 Super Credits for battle passes and cosmetics. Sony has likely noticed how well some of Microsoft’s own multiplayer games performed on PlayStation.
Learning from Xbox’s Strategy
Microsoft previously launched several of its games, including Sea of Thieves and Grounded, on PlayStation and Nintendo Switch. Sales data showed that online multiplayer games were especially successful, with Sea of Thieves selling nearly 2 million copies on PlayStation alone! This success undoubtedly caught Sony’s eye.
What Kind of PlayStation Games Could Come Next?
Don’t expect PlayStation’s big story-driven hits like God of War or The Last of Us to jump to Xbox anytime soon. These titles are a major reason players buy a PlayStation console. However, other multiplayer and live-service games are much more likely. Sony has future online-focused titles like Fairgames and a new game from teamLFG (a studio with ties to Destiny‘s creators) that could follow Helldivers 2’s lead if it performs well on Xbox.
