Russia Unleashes Record Drone Attack on Ukraine: Over 700 Aerial Weapons Target Cities
Ukraine recently faced its largest aerial assault since the start of the full-scale invasion, as Russia launched an unprecedented number of drones and missiles. Officials reported that Russia unleashed 728 drones and 13 missiles overnight, making it the biggest air attack recorded in the ongoing conflict.
This massive barrage, which included Shahed attack drones along with hypersonic and cruise missiles, aimed to overwhelm Ukraine’s air defenses. The timing of the attack followed U.S. President Donald Trump’s pledge to send more defensive weapons to Kyiv and his critical remarks towards Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Key Targets and Impact:
The northwestern city of Lutsk, located near the Polish border and home to Ukrainian airfields, was the primary target, experiencing the heaviest bombardment. Authorities in Lutsk reported damaged buildings, including a local enterprise’s storage facility and parking structures, which caught fire.
Beyond Lutsk, at least 10 other regions across Ukraine were also hit, including major cities like Kyiv, Dnipro, and Kharkiv. Tragically, one person was killed in the Khmelnytskyi region, and two were wounded in the Kyiv region during the intense attack.

Russia’s Record Drone Attack on Ukraine: Scale, Targets & Ukraine’s Defense |
Ukraine’s Robust Defense:
Despite the massive scale of the assault, Ukraine’s air defense systems demonstrated remarkable effectiveness. They successfully shot down 718 of the total 741 aerial threats, including 296 Shahed drones and seven missiles. An additional 415 drones were either jammed or lost through electronic warfare systems, preventing them from reaching their targets. Ukrainian officials highlighted the growing effectiveness of their domestically produced interceptor drones in countering Russian attacks.
Wider Implications:
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that this demonstrative attack underscores the urgent need for “biting sanctions” against Russia’s revenue sources, especially those involved in buying Russian oil. This record-breaking assault is seen as part of Russia’s escalating air campaign, designed to stretch Ukraine’s air defense capabilities and disrupt crucial Western weapon supplies. The conflict, now in its fourth year, continues to see both sides rapidly developing and deploying drone technology.
