Deadly Flash Floods Ravage Texas: Camp Mystic Among Hardest Hit
Catastrophic flash floods swept through Central Texas over the recent holiday weekend, causing widespread devastation and leading to a significant loss of life. As of July 7, 2025, over 80 people have been confirmed dead, with dozens more still missing, as rescue efforts continue tirelessly across the region.
Camp Mystic Tragedy
One of the most severely impacted areas was Camp Mystic, a long-standing Christian summer camp for girls located along the Guadalupe River in Hunt, Kerr County. The camp, which has been a summer haven for generations, turned into a scene of unimaginable tragedy. Reports confirm that 27 campers and counselors from Camp Mystic have died, and several more remain unaccounted for.
The Guadalupe River, typically a picturesque feature, transformed into a raging torrent in the early hours of Friday, July 4. Fueled by over 10 inches of torrential rain in just a few hours, the river rose an astonishing 26 feet in less than an hour, sweeping away cabins, homes, and vehicles. Many were caught by surprise as they slept, with water reaching treetops and cabin roofs. Survivors describe harrowing escapes, clinging to trees or swimming to higher ground.

Massive Rescue Efforts Underway
First responders, including Texas Game Wardens, Coast Guard aircraft, and hundreds of volunteers, immediately launched a massive search and rescue operation. Helicopters, boats, and drones have been deployed to scour the debris-filled landscapes for survivors. Over 850 people have been rescued within 36 hours from rooftops, trees, and floodwaters. Despite these heroic efforts, the grim reality is that the death toll is expected to rise as search operations continue for the missing.
Questions Arise About Warnings and Preparedness
The sudden and extreme nature of the flood has raised serious questions about emergency warnings and preparedness. While the National Weather Service had issued flood watches and even rare flash flood emergency alerts in the hours leading up to the disaster, many residents and camp officials claim they did not anticipate a flood of this magnitude. Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly stated that the county lacks a comprehensive warning system and that no one foresaw such an intense downpour. Concerns have also been raised regarding potential staffing cuts at the National Weather Service affecting their ability to disseminate timely and accurate warnings.
Families are reeling from the devastating losses, with many sharing heartbreaking pleas for information about their loved ones. The community has come together to support rescue efforts, but the path to recovery for the Texas Hill Country will be long and arduous.
